Background of the Study
Digital platforms are increasingly recognized as incubators for neologisms—new words and expressions that emerge from creative communication practices. In Nigeria, Facebook has become a prominent space where hashtag neologisms proliferate, reflecting the dynamic interplay between culture, technology, and language. This study examines how hashtags on Facebook serve as fertile grounds for linguistic innovation, often capturing social sentiments and cultural references in succinct expressions (Olabisi, 2023). Hashtag neologisms not only encapsulate novel ideas but also challenge existing language paradigms by introducing unconventional word formations and semantic shifts (Ajayi, 2024). Digital discourse on Facebook is marked by a high degree of interactivity, where users adopt, adapt, and disseminate new lexical items in real time. Such practices underscore the transformative potential of digital communication to influence language change. This research explores the creation, adoption, and evolution of hashtag neologisms, linking digital behavior with broader socio-linguistic trends. Through a detailed analysis of Facebook discourse, the study contributes to our understanding of how social media can serve as a catalyst for linguistic creativity and innovation (Chinonso, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the observable emergence of hashtag neologisms in Nigerian digital discourse, there is a dearth of systematic research examining their formation and impact. While hashtags on Facebook are widely used to encapsulate social commentary and cultural trends, the processes underlying their lexical innovation remain underexplored. This gap in literature leaves unanswered questions regarding the sustainability, acceptance, and influence of these new expressions on traditional language practices. The absence of robust analytical frameworks hinders our ability to gauge the broader linguistic implications of digital neologisms. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the dynamics of hashtag neologism creation and dissemination, providing empirical evidence to bridge the existing knowledge gap (Ike, 2023). This inquiry is critical to understanding the evolving relationship between digital communication and language transformation (Nnamdi, 2024).
